“Meet Mike Riley” continues the introduction of BGFMA Certified Fabricator members whose many years of experience can be valuable to provide sound advice during plan preparation, fabrication, and installation.

“Georgia DOT Applies ABC Techniques over the Etowah River,” highlights the use of modular precast grid deck panels in accelerated bridge construction.  Using bare grid panels supplied by BGFMA Certified Fabricator Bailey Bridges, Contractor LC Whitford precast panels at their own facility in Alpharetta, GA and replaced both parallel spans each in a two week closure.

“South Park Bascule Bridge Replacement in King County, Washington Garners Awards,” showcases the use of a lightweight grid reinforced concrete bridge deck application on another movable span.  This replacement bascule structure was design-challenged to meet unprecedented seismic performance requirements for a movable bridge.

“Grid Facts” discusses the importance of 3/8″ maximum aggregate for all grid decks.

Roads & Bridges, Record-breaking bascule

A grid reinforced concrete deck was an integral component for this design achieving the status as the heaviest bascule span in the world and the second largest by deck area.  Check out the April 2017 edition of Roads & Bridges magazine Case Study in which the Fort Street (M-85) bascule bridge over the Rouge River is highlighted.

Roads & Bridges, Re-Decking of the New York Expressway/Dyer Avenue …

All roadway and bridge construction or rehabilitation performed within New York City has the potential to create a traffic gridlock nightmare.  This is especially true when the work being performed is in very close proximity to a major arterial route linking Manhattan to an adjacent Borough or the neighboring State of New Jersey.  Such is the case when the bridge deck on the New York Expressway/Dyer Avenue needed to be replaced.

Due to the strategic importance of the structure, full closure to perform the work was not an option and due to the narrow width, neither was staged construction.  The PANYNJ permitted weeknight closures between 10 PM and 5 AM the following morning to remove and replace the nearly 20,000 square feet of bridge deck.
